About us
SAAZ Music is an independent organisation based in the UK run by volunteers who all share the ambition of bringing excellence in Indian Classical music to everyone. SAAZ Music was established in 1989 by Ranjeet S Sokhi and started operating in the West Midlands area. Since 1991, it has been operating in Herts/Beds region as well as further afield including Leicester and London. Since its inception, SAAZ Music has been run on a non-profit basis and relies on the input of students, musicians and all friends of Indian classical music.
While our specialism is Indian classical music, we have worked with musicians from other genres too. Our over-riding aim is to create opportunities for students of Indian classical music to achieve their full potential irrespective of their background, gender or race. We do this by working with the best internationally renowned musicians to develop training programmes that are based on traditional, authentic foundations while benefiting from modern methods of learning. SAAZ Music activities include one to one sessions, workshops, master classes, lectures and demonstrations, concerts and showcase performances.
IMPORTANCE OF GURU-SHISHYA PARAMPARA (TRADITION)
All Indian classical musicians of wide, international repute have received a significant proportion of their primary training through the Guru-Shishya parampara or tradition. This form of training and learning relies on a one to one transmission of the knowledge and experience from the teacher (Guru) to the student (Shishya). This type of learning is at the root of Indian Classical Music. SAAZ Music fully supports such a method of learning and all students receive training based on this system. While a range of learning formats are employed all students have the opportunity to train directly with our Gurus (Master Musicians) from India. All tutors working for SAAZ Music have received their training in this form themselves. If you are interested in learning, please contact us to register your interest.
